  21. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION ONLINE *****
  22. The Administrator's Guide has an incorrect entry for the [Win32] 
  23. section.  The correct command is CMD=  not CMDLINE=.
  24.  
  25. ***** _DEFAULT.NNS CHANGE FROM PRIOR VERSIONS *****
  26. 1) The default options ScanOpen and ScanCreate in the [AutoProtect] 
  27. Section have been defaulted to the ON state. This helps facilitate the 
  28. detection of macro viruses. 
  29.  
  30. 2) ***** FORCING A REBOOT AFTER DISTRIBUTION *****
  31. You may force a reboot of the user's system even if Windows is 
  32. actively running on the system by specifying "3" as the reboot option 
  33. in the [Install/Update] section:
  34.  
  35. ; 0=Don't Reboot
  36. ; 1=Reboot unless in Windows
  37. ; 2=Prompt to Reboot
  38. ; 3=Reboot upon completion, even if in Windows
  39. ActionAfterInstalling=3
  40.  
  41. 3) ***** AUTOMATIC LIVEUPDATE SETTING *****
  42. A new feature in Norton AntiVirus 4.0 is the program's ability to run 
  43. LiveUpdate on the workstation when the virus definitions are out of date.
  44. To enable this feature, put the following entry in the [WIN.INI_NAV16]
  45. section:

  47. AutomaticLiveUpdate=1
  48.  
  49. 4) ***** ADDING A NEW "LOAD=" or "RUN=" LINE INTO THE WIN.INI *****
  50. A new feature in Norton AntiVirus 4.0 is the program's ability to 
  51. create a new (additional) load= or run= line when required. Simply add 
  52. an extra "+" sign to the directive line in the [WIN.INI_Windows] 
  53. section:
  54.  
  55. Traditional method:
  56. +LOAD=%NAVDIR%NAVTSRW.EXE

  58. New line method:
  59. +LOAD=+%NAVDIR%NAVTSRW.EXE

  61. 5) ***** [Put NAVAfter] SECTION NAME CHANGED TO [PutNAVTSRAfter] *****
  62. This takes care of a problem introduced with a previous release. This 
  63. allows the user to specify where to put the NAVTSR driver in the
  64. Autoexec.bat file.
  65.  
  66. 6) ***** COMMAND LINE SWITCHES CAN BE ADDED TO CLOAKING DRIVER *****
  67. Switches for the cloaking driver (Cloaking.exe) can now be specified
  68. with a new entry in the [Install/Update] section:

  72. 7) ***** COMMAND LINE ARGUMENTS CAN BE EASILY UPDATED NOW *****
  73. A new entry in the [Install/Update] section allows the command line 
  74. argument changes for Navtsr.exe, Cloaking.exe and Nav.exe that are 
  75. installed in the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files to be updated in 
  76. one pass. By setting the entry to "1", all three nav executables are 
  77. tested for compliance with the strings after AutoProtectCmdLine= or
  78. CloakingCmdLine= or ScannerCmdLine= entries. If necessary, the 
  79. Autoexec.bat or Config.sys file(s) are brought up to date.

  83. 8) ***** CONTROL OVER BUTTONS IN GENERAL SECTION *****
  84. Several icons on the main NAV display can be surpressed by adjusting entries
  85. in the WIN.INI file.

  93. 9) ***** CONTROL OVER PERFORMANCE SECTION *****
  94. This switch will enable the display of the section that sets OpenMode and 
  95. ExcludeFirst in the "General" property page of NAV.

  100. ***** UNWANTED OR DUPICATE NAVTSR AND CLOAKING ENTRIES REMOVED *****
  101. Duplicate entries of Navtsr.exe and Cloaking.exe are religiously 
  102. removed from the Config.sys file.
  103.  
  104. ***** WIN.INI NOW SAVED CORRECTLY *****
  105. The problem with the Win.ini file not being saved or not being saved 
  106. Correctly now works. The Undo.bat file will now restore all the saved
  107. Files.
  108.  
  109. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION ONLINE *****
  110. The Norton AntiVirus Automatic Protection TSR provides real-time 
  111. protection to prevent virus-infected files from being downloaded
  112. from the Internet, bulletin boards, or other online sources.  For
  113. full protection while downloading, enable the Scan on Open and
  114. Scan on Create options in the Options - Auto-Protect Settings dialog
  115. box.
  116.  
  117. ***** WORD AND EXCEL MACRO VIRUS DETECTION *****
  118. New installations of Norton AntiVirus detect Word and Excel Macro 
  119. Viruses automatically.  If you are upgrading from a previous version,
  120. you must modify the Program Files Extensions List and add the .DOC and
  121. .DOT extensions.
  122.  
  123. ***** WARM BOOT TRAP *****
  124. TSRs, device drivers, or programs that trap warm boots (Ctrl+Alt+Del)
  125. may override Automatic Protection's ability to check for boot viruses
  126. on floppy disks.  Likewise, programs that perform a warm boot without
  127. Ctrl+Alt+Del will bypass the automatic check for boot viruses.
  128.  
  129. ***** INOCULATION FILES *****
  130. The inoculation files are NAVSYS.DAT and NAVINOC.DAT.  They are stored
  131. in the NCDTREE directory by default.
  132.  
  133. ***** "AUTOPROTECT SELF-TEST FAILED" ERROR *****
  134. Although this error occurs in Windows, it is almost always caused by
  135. insufficient free conventional memory.  You need at least 475K of 
  136. conventional memory available before starting Windows.  To check the
  137. amount of conventional memory available, type "MEM /C" at a DOS prompt
  138. before starting Windows.  The value reported for "largest executable
  139. program size" must be greater than 475K.
  140.  
  141. ***** FILES STATEMENT IN CONFIG.SYS *****
  142. Norton AntiVirus requires that FILES be set to at least 25 in your
  143. CONFIG.SYS file.  During install, NAV makes sure the FILES statement
  144. in CONFIG.SYS is adequate for your hard disk boot.  If you boot from
  145. a floppy disk without this setting, Norton AntiVirus will fail to run
  146. and display the following message:  "The file NAV.EXE has been 
  147. altered."
  148.  
  149. To boot from a floppy disk and be able to run Norton AntiVirus, make
  150. sure the floppy disk contains a CONFIG.SYS file with at least a
  151. "FILES=25" statement.
  152.  
  153. ***** SCANNING ZIP ARCHIVES *****
  154. The following limitations exist when scanning ZIP archives:
  155.  
  156.  * Password protected files in a ZIP archive (stored with the
  157.    PKZIP -s option) are not scanned.
  158.  
  159.  * Norton AntiVirus for DOS cannot scan ZIP archives with more than
  160.    about 1,000 files; the exact number of files depends on the
  161.    amount of available memory.
  162.  
  163. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION AND MEMORY OPTIMIZATION *****
  164. The automatic protection TSR does not require memory optimization to 
  165. Use UMBs efficiently.  If you are planning to optimize memory, we 
  166. Recommend doing so before installing Norton AntiVirus.  If Norton 
  167. AntiVirus is already installed, remove automatic protection from 
  168. CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT and reboot before running the optimization 
  169. program. Once the memory optimization is complete, add the command to 
  170. load automatic protection back to the appropriate file and reboot.
  171.  
  172. ***** SCANNING IN BATCH MODE / UNATTENDED SCANNING *****
  173. If you want to run Norton AntiVirus unattended so that it doesn't
  174. pause when alert boxes appear, use the following procedure:
  175.  
  176. To customize Norton AntiVirus to run in batch mode:
  177. 1) Select one of the following options from the "When a Virus is Found"
  178.    drop-down list box in the Options - Scanner Settings dialog box:
  179.    "Notify Only," "Repair Automatically," or "Delete Automatically."
  180. 2) Check the "Immediate Notify" check box in the Scanner Advanced
  181.    Settings dialog box.
  182. 3) Check the "Remove Alert Dialog After" check box in the Options -
  183.    Alerts Settings dialog box, then enter 1 in the "Seconds" text
  184.    box.
  185.  
  186. ***** TECHNOTE.TXT *****
  187. This text file contains information about viruses that
  188. cause unique problems and require special handling.  
  189.  
  190. ***** RUNNING THE DOS SCANNER WHEN BOOTING WITHOUT STARTUP FILES *****
  191. The DOS scanner on certain 386 and early 486 machines may have problems
  192. running when you boot up without a CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT file. You 
  193. can eliminate these problems by booting up with DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS in the 
  194. CONFIG.SYS or by typing in "SET DOS16M=0" (without the quotes) at the DOS 
  195. prompt prior to running the DOS scanner.

  203. ***** MICROSOFT WINDOWS *****
  204. If you are prompted to inoculate a file while windows is loading and
  205. your computer subsequently "hangs," type the following command at
  206. the DOS prompt to inoculate the windows files:
  207.  
  208.      C:\NAV\NAV /REFRESH C:\WINDOWS /S
  209.  
  210. If Norton AntiVirus is not installed in C:\NAV or Windows is not
  211. installed in C:\WINDOWS, substitute the appropriate path.
  212.  
  213. After inoculating the windows files you can then load Windows.
  214.  
  215. ***** WINDOWS SCREEN SAVER AND SCHEDULER *****
  216. If your screen saver is not activating with Scheduler loaded,
  217. select "Hide When Iconized" from the Scheduler Options menu.  If
  218. you don't want to hide the Scheduler icon, add the following
  219. statement to the [Scheduler] section in the SCHEDULE.INI
  220. file:
  221.         ICONTIME=0
  222.  
  223. The SCHEDULE.INI file is located in your Windows directory.
  224.  
  225. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION AND UPDATING SOFTWARE *****
  226. If you have configured Norton AntiVirus to detect unknown viruses using the
  227. Virus Sensor Technology feature, you may get unknown virus alerts when
  228. installing or updating software.  This does not necessarily mean the file is
  229. infected with an unknown virus.  The installation process may be overwriting
  230. existing files or expanding compressed files, which may trigger an alert.
  231.  
  232. ***** AUTOMATIC PROTECTION AND COMPRESSED DRIVES *****
  233. If you install Norton AntiVirus on a compressed drive and subsequently get
  234. the error message "NAVOPTS.DAT file not found, default settings loaded,"
  235. install automatic protection as a TSR. 
  236.  
  237. ***** BYPASS KEYS WITH MEMORY MANAGERS *****
  238. By default, pressing both ALT keys will bypass the loading of the Auto-Protect
  239. feature of Norton AntiVirus.  The memory managers, QEMM and 386MAX, also use
  240. both ALT keys to bypass their loading.  If you are using either of these
  241. memory managers, you may wish to modify the bypass keys used by Norton
  242. AntiVirus.  
  243.  
  244. ***** NORTON ADMINISTRATOR FOR NETWORKS *****
  245. If you are using the License Metering feature of Norton Administrator for
  246. Networks, turn off the "Use UNC Path Names" option in the License Metering
  247. Configuration screen.  This ensures maximum compatibility with Norton
  248. AntiVirus.
  249.  
  250. ***** INSTALLING FROM AN OS/2 DOS BOX *****
  251. Norton AntiVirus will not install properly from within an OS/2 DOS box.
  252. To properly install in an OS/2 DOS box, run "INSTALL /NOMTC" for
  253. "No Multitasking Check".  This will bypass the Norton AntiVirus attempt
  254. to check for a multitasking environment.
  255.  
  256. ***** INSTALLING WITH AFTER DARK VERSION 3 ***** 
  257. If you experience problems with the Windows TSR in conjunction with the 
  258. After Dark 3 screen saver, you may turn off the startup memory scanning 
  259. in the Windows TSR to avoid any problems. You may scan memory prior to 
  260. starting Windows with the DOS TSR and the use of the alternative options 
  261. switch (/OPTS). Please see your documentation for more details on the use 
  262. of this command line parameter.
  263.  
  264. ***** PERFORMANCE ISSUES UNDER NOVELL CLIENT32 ON A NETWORK *****
  265. If you are experiencing extreme performance degredation while using the 
  266. Windows TSR over a network while using Novell's Client32 software make 
  267. the following change to your WIN.INI file:
  268.  
  269. [NAV16]
  270. OpenShared=0
  271.  
  272. ***** NETX LOADING HIGH *****
  273. Under certain circumstances, if the NETX network driver is loaded high 
  274. after the TSR is loaded, the network alerting in the DOS TSR may not work 
  275. correctly. If you experience this problem, you can type in NAVTSR /NR+ 
  276. to reinstate the alerting.
  277.  
  278. ***** QUARTERDECK'S QUICKBOOT FEATURE *****
  279. Please note that Quickboot bypasses the system memory scanning and this 
  280. causes the warm boot floppy scanning to be skipped.
  281.  
  282. ***** BREAKING OUT OF A NETWORK DISTRIBUTION *****
  283. Please be aware that users can break out of a network distribution while 
  284. we are in the process of scanning for viruses on their system prior to 
  285. installation. You may turn off the scanning in order to prevent the users
  286. from breaking out of the installation process.
